Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of dry eye syndrome among students in colleges and universities in Shenyang. Methods: From Mar to Jul 2017,students from 32 colleges and universities in Shenyang were investigated. Using a random sampling method,10 students were selected for each grade in each school. The survey was preceded by a pilot study in which operational methods were refined and quality assurance evaluation was carried out. Students were investigated by questionnaire and clinical examination which included slit-lamp examination, corneal fluorescent stain test, tear break-up time (BUT)test and Schirmer I tear test. The prevalence of dry eye syndrome was calculated and the clinical data were statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 1 210 students were enrolled in this study. The incidence of dry eye syndrome were 3.14%(38/1 210). Dryness(78.95%)and foreign body sensation(73.68%)were the most common symptoms. Staying up late orinsomnia,long-term use of computer and smoking were risk factors of dry eyesyndrome. There was no significance in the incidence of dry eye syndrome in different grade students, different sex students, undergraduate and college students(P>0.05).Conclusions: Patients with dry eye syndrome are younger, and the most common clinical symptoms are dryness and foreign body sensation. Staying up late orinsomnia, long-term use of computer and smoking are the most common causes of dry eye syndrome.
